So 2d3 means 2 rolls of 1-3, which means a possible 2-6 damage
If it's a +2,+4 2d3 and you roll a 2 then a 3, 2+3+4=9 damage wise?

I found a 2 handed sword and a vorp weapon scroll using Athena and thought I had the sword equipped and poofed my spear

I was trying to figure if a plain 2handed was better then the starting weapon

I don't know, but that sounds right to me....... and I'm greatful to find out that I'm not the only person who's frakked up and made Athena's spear go *poof* ;)

That is correct as far as how damage is calculated.

I think the two best starting weapons are as follows:

(1) Two handed sword. 4d4 guarantees at least 4 points of damage and up to 16 points
(2) War hammer: 6d2 guarantees at least 6 points of damage and up to 12 points

If I find a two handed sword early, I generally make that my preferred weapon. If you can get it enhanced a few times it becomes a very strong weapon, but it is pretty decent even before that. A good war hammer makes a decent ranged weapon as well.

But surely if you have a +2,+4 2d3 you should have 4 rolls not two?

+4 rolls would be insane, instead of +4 damage you would have +4-16

The damage gets added after the weapon equation is finished

That's my understanding

The way DnD always worked was like this...

A +2+2 weapon with say 2d6 would equate like this

2d6=2-12 damage, then u add the bonus of +2 would make it 4-14 damage. The bonus is always added after the dice roll. It is like a bonus to the dice roll. I leanred this from many years of playing baldurs gate. The only game better than this one. Man i wish they would make another game just like that one.

Thanks Jhawk and Hopz, that all makes sense now (although i am sure you can quote me somewhere saying that before lol).

Yeah with the Athena competition I have been saving my increase weapon scrolls and not using them on the Spear, I mostly just use the spear for exploring and with its extended light range I switch to a higher damage weapon when a monster is near. Even with the chance of 6d6 lightning, if I need something dead I often won't risk the chance that lightning won't hit.

Anyone know what the difference between +str and a +dam rings are?

Does 1 point of Str add more than +1 damage? Or is 1 point of Str actually +1/+1?

gotta agree with you there...the Baldur's gate series was one of the most in-depth role playing games with a good storyline that I have played (and happens to be where I also learned my dnd stuff :D ) They just had a right balance of in-depth side quests (none of this "kill 10 orcs in the area and return to me" but REAL side-quests) and the main quest.
