I'm not sure what it is about Level 19, but I swear about 90% of my deaths occur on this level, for one stupid reason or another.

Anybody else?

I think level 19 is about the time griffons start to appear. If you don't have one (or better more) of the following you are toast:

-wand of paralysis
-wand of cornucopia
-ring of stealth

Getting to the griffons is easy. Getting past them is another point all together. I ascended last night with nothing better than a +2/+2 blessed two handed sword and -2 armor class. I did have a ring of stealth which made it very easy to avoid the nasty monsters.

I've died there many times, but it's only about 20% of my deaths I also frequently die around floor 15 or 16, then down in the upper 20's. I've gotten the amulet twice, and gotten killed by jabberwocks both times before even getting close to the surface
