To Die Or Not To Die

Postby MikeL » Wed May 13, 2009 4:08 am

So I finally checked out of my final run with my non secret character. Didn't really floor dance as such but originally made it to level 75 and back to level 1 before dropping my amulet and hitting a pit (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=154) ....rather than going back to level 26 to collect it again I decided to attempt an even deeper dive....was getting very tough at level 100 so if I was ever going to make it out alive I decided it best to turn around.....so with a pretty silly gold count of around 250k (and moves!) and 3000 kills I retired....funnily enough I had close to 30m xp and was hit twice by a wraith on the way up...that reduced me back to rogue god and something like 1.3m....painful drop but I was already so far up that it made no difference.....

So is it really better to die in the dungeon as opposed to making it back out alive? deciding when to turn, and in fact making it back, I think is much harder than to accept death and dive as deep as possible……at level 100 I could have gone on for some time longer, but probably wouldn’t have made it out safely….Going back up is certainly much harder and more time-consuming than coming down!!

The Leaderboard (wealthiest rogue) does seem to favour the dead so perhaps it would have been a better option running as deep as possible until I expired. On the other hand whilst MikeL is enjoying a well deserved cold beer he can rest with the thought of passing the corpse of Twalkabout on level 70 being eaten by a Centaur….twice… ;)

You should always play to the death with a none secret character Mike, its the only scoreboard that doesnt get refreshed after x days. On a good run at the moment up to level 80 something, got about 90,000 gold and not looking in too bad shape, although my health has been wittled down to under 90  . I reckon i need around 102,000 to crack Twalkabout score as you lose 10% when you die, and i have done no floor dancing except when i got to level 31 and i dropped through 3 traps on the bounce really quickly. I couldnt kill a thing so decided to go up 2 levels before carrying on back down.

If you wnt down to level 75 then back up to 1, then back down again to 100 and back up - it's floor dancing.

Hugely impressive run anyway! How many hours did you put into that?

Should have gotten 300k gold and then you would hold the all time gold record* for any character (I did it with a secret char, so your normal guy is in the lead by far for that). It's interesting though, since you went down-up-down-up you actually traversed something like 350 levels, I went straight down so I only hit about 250 or so.

*I've never seen anyone saying they got more, but I could be wrong with the way the leaderboards reset.

Great run jim2wheels...A gold to move ratio of 2/1 is really good and proves you didn't floor dance too much....when i turned around at level 75 i did have more than 100k gold as well so i think we would have been close....to your point quite a few hours over a few days did go into this run...that's what train journeys are for right ;-)

Elysium - i reckon i could have gone at least another 30-50 floors so 300k would have been very achievable with my equipment and hp...it may have been 350 floors (plus pits!) int total but the trouble about going up is that it is not very rewarding...monsters are hard and there is hardly any equipment/gold/food on the floors....

Thanks Mike, i'm kinda glad that run is over as it was wearing me down! Although goods seem to dry up as you go deeper, it was nicely offset by the piles of gold as you go down. On floor 95 (where i eventually died) i was finding up to 90+ gold pieces on the floor walking around thanks to my two rings of searching :D i was easily finding 2000-4000 gold on each level at that point. If it wasnt for those damn vampires sucking my hp down to 40 (pic can be found on a post called Most Annoying Monsters) i could of gone on forever - but i guess thats what they are there for :) Frequency of healing potions would need to go up to counter the vampire effects - which would be nice CD ;)

I have to say i doubt i would of got as far as i did without a two handed sword of freezing, it was the first time i had ever picked one up as well! I think it ended up on +10+11. It is by far the best effect to have, which is a shame as it makes everything else seem worthless.

Gonna take a much deserved break for a while and see how the table takes shape, good luck on your next run, I can honestly say the best way to go is down down down - it's where the big bucks are at! 8-)
