Who took ma gold stash?

Ok, so i just had a really good run, got to level 30 with 16000+ gold and eventually got numbered thanks to those pesky Medusas in a treasure room. Never mind - good attempt Jim, should get yourself nice and high on a few of the leaderboards. But when i got the "you died screen" i only had 14000 or so gold?!
Can anyone shed some light on this? Feeling pretty hard done by at the moment...

You lose 10% to cover your "last rights and burial". Only if you win do you not lose any gold.
